An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced practitioner to join the Council’s Youth Justice Service as a Team Manager.

The Role:

The Youth Justice Service is a multi-agency partnership service established under S.37 of the Crime and Disorder Act with the principle aims of reducing offending and re-offending of young people.

They work with children and young people on the periphery of the youth justice system to prevent them from becoming first time entrants, with those young people involved with the Police and receiving out of court disposals, and young people convicted in Court.

They work with young people in the secure estate on remand and sentenced to custody and are responsible for the resettlement of young people back into the community. The YJS also oversees services to victims of youth crime, including restorative justice interventions.

What they’re looking for:

They’re looking for candidates who are dedicated, positive and passionate about improving outcomes for children and young people involved in or on the periphery of the youth justice system in Walsall.

The right person needs to join a close-knit restorative team, promote inclusion and manage and support practitioners through change and challenges whilst driving up standards.

They want staff and management teams to reflect the diversity of the communities served. To this end they positively welcome applications from black and minority ethnic people (Section 158 of the Equality Act 2010 applies). However, appointment will be entirely on merit.

Candidates must have a relevant qualification, have significant experience of working with children and young people and of complex risk management. They’re looking for an individual with the ability to manage multi-agency services for children and families, and have knowledge of best practice for children who offend and trauma informed approaches.

The post holder must have a social work qualification, probation officer qualification or a good quality relevant degree i.e. BA in youth justice or criminology. The post holder must also hold the Professional Certificate in Effective Practice (PCEP) or Youth Justice Effective Practice Certificate (YJEPC) or be prepared to complete the qualification within the first 12 months of employment.

They’re proud to be pushing for better outcomes for young people and families in Walsall and share the WR4C ‘Walsall Right for Children’ vision. They hope you can join them in this journey.

This post is covered by the Government’s Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty for public sector workers. The post holder will be required to communicate verbally with customers and provide advice and/or information in accurate spoken English.

The Council takes seriously the responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all the children and young people entrusted to their care and it is their expectation that all staff will share this commitment. Completion of an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check is a requirement for working with children and young people.
