Job Title: Student Services Safeguarding Support Officer

The Role:
The role of the Student Services Safeguarding Support Officer is a fantastic opportunity for someone of approachable character who works well with young people and who wants to joins a collaborative team to support young people to achieve. The role requires the post-holder to work as part of the safeguarding team, to identify and respond to safeguarding concerns, and will suit someone who has begun to have experience in this area and is looking to build on those skills. This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic safeguarding team in providing excellent support to students. The post holder will also take a key role in supporting the administrative functions of the team alongside the Safeguarding Officer and Safeguarding Manager.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Working with students in need of a higher level of support who have been signposted to Student Services
- As a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead to work closely with the safeguarding team to ensure that students identified as requiring additional support are referred on accordingly and supporting students through the development of safeguarding safety plans as required
- To support the work of the safeguarding team by conducting appropriate assessments and referrals with students including Early Help assessments and referrals to Housing or Mental Health teams
- Referral to food banks including issuing of food bank vouchers. Contact with families and other agencies as required, gaining consent from the family to engage with services who may be best placed to support them
- Make safeguarding referrals to children’s and adults services, as required, and provide support for students with social workers including attendance at meetings as needed
- To support vulnerable students including those who are Looked After, Living Independently and Young carers
- Including working with the Finance Team to identify students eligible for bursary and free college meals
- Following the College safeguarding systems and procedures responding to safeguarding concerns that may be raised or disclosed and escalating in line with college procedures
- Applying the Greater Manchester Level of Need Framework and identifying when the estimated level of need requires review
- To maintain timely and accurate records on the Safeguarding Log including the uploading of documents
- Apply sensitive approaches when handling issues pertaining to confidentiality and information sharing including GDPR
- Work with the Safeguarding Officer to support the annual safeguarding file transfer from previous schools, sharing of information and safe storage of files
- Support the administration of Safeguarding Level Review meetings
- Gathering details and completing Incident Reports following the report of an incident, supporting students to contact the police where required
- Ensuring staff room safeguarding noticeboards are up-to-date and relevant information displayed
- Development and maintenance of weekly staff ‘Safeguarding Pop-Up’ messages
- Support the Mental Health Lead and Safeguarding Officer to periodically review the mental health levels of need using the College framework
- Support the work of the safeguarding team in the arranging and booking of meetings and visitors. Supporting students where appropriate with visits from eternal agencies
- Work with the wider Student Services team providing advice and guidance to students or signposting to relevant others
- Maintaining a good understanding of safeguarding themes, attend training and Level 3 safeguarding training
- Undertake any other tasks commensurate with the grading of the post
Job Requirements:
- Experience in an administrative role
- Experience of dealing with student safeguarding issues, including referrals, escalating where necessary and appropriate
- Experience of analysing and reporting on student data
- Experience of working with senior managers and key external stakeholders
- Excellent knowledge of the relevant safeguarding legislation and the College’s safeguarding procedures / processes
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and how to report and analyse data
- Excellent standards of literacy and numeracy
- Ability to work with other staff as a team
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Evidence of commitment to Continuous Professional Development
- IT literate educated to degree level or equivalent, or substantial relevant experience that demonstrates a high order of literacy, numeracy and analytical skills
- Holds a recognised safeguarding qualification or willingness to study towards one
