Job title: Software Engineer (PHP, Laravel)
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne (Hybrid)
Salary: £32,000 – £38,000 per year
Job type: Full time, permanent, Hybrid working – flexible by default to support a productive and balanced week.
The Company:
Proudly based in the North East, we research, design, and develop excellent digital products for some of the UK’s most ambitious technology teams.
We value curiosity, integrity and good open communication so we look to work with clients where their team’s values align well with ours, to help us do our best work.
- We thrive on shipping excellent products, but never at the cost of a healthy balance.
- We like process and best practice, but turn our nose up at bureaucracy.
- We love good communication, but can’t be arsed with petty politics.
- We’re building a team and a business we want to work in. Simple, open and flexible.
An authentic product studio is a tough business to get right… but nothing worth doing is ever easy. We like a challenge and we’ve spent the past 18+ years getting pretty damn good at it.
Hybrid working:
We have team members working from around the UK, with the business operating a flexible, hybrid model to support a productive and balanced week.
Although we won’t be requiring regular attendance, we expect that if you live outside of the North East, you’d be asked to visit occasionally for face-to-face client or internal activities (and the occasional team night out). We’ll foot the bill for travel and accommodation.
The Candidate:
As a software engineer at Komodo, it’s your responsibility to collaborate with the team, helping developers learn new concepts and assisting designers in understanding what’s possible. You’ll think creatively when solving problems and endeavour to challenge the obvious answer, asking yourself “Is this the best version of the solution”
We’re looking for someone who wants to create software so good, people want to use it. We think that in order to build great products using the latest tech, you need to be someone eager to keep up-to-date with industry tools, technologies and best practices. On top of self-lead learning, we support by covering the cost of course material on Udemy, training resources and a shared library of literature.
Working together is better than working alone, so we encourage quality feedback between peers in the design and development team to share knowledge and know-how. Quality control is not only important for someone’s personal brand but the brand of our business, so we encourage PRs to be peer-reviewed.
Required Skills/Qualifications:
We believe that you eventually become the average of the people you spend your time around, so we’ve worked hard to build a team of talented people who bounce off each other’s strengths. If that sounds like a team you want to contribute to and thrive in, you’ll have:
- 2+ years of demonstrable PHP experience.
- A thorough understanding of PHP development on the LAMP/LEMP stacks.
- Demonstrable experience of modern Laravel development.
- A thorough understanding of responsive design and development.
- Understanding of unit-testing PHP applications.
- Demonstrable WordPress theme, plug-in & site development experience.
Perks and benefits
Paying people fairly and competitively, providing balanced perks and an environment where they’re valued is a no brainer. We do our best to deliver on these core commitments. If you’re a member of the team, we provide;
- A salary matched to your experience and expertise.
- Hybrid working – flexible by default to support a productive and balanced week.
- £1,500 + 3 days annual professional training budget.
- Portable Mac hardware that can handle multiple Chrome tabs.

- We’ll assess your needs and help out with any kit that will improve your remote working situation.
