Job Title: Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Salary: £34,788 – £37,849 per annum

This exciting, challenging and rare opportunity, based in Telford, Shropshire, requires an ambitious, experienced and determined Senior Geotechnical Engineer who is looking to take the next step in their career.
The successful candidate will work in The Councils Geotechnical Engineering Team with duties in the Borough and in the unique Ironbridge World Heritage Site (WHS), the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
The Borough of Telford & Wrekin and the Ironbridge Gorge offers on-going engineering challenges found nowhere else in the UK. The Borough as well as the Gorge have been intensely mined for coal, ironstone, clay, limestone and sandstone over the past two thousand years all of which left their mark on the landscape.
The Legacy of the Industrial revolution coupled with some of the most diverse geology in the United Kingdom requires excellent problem solving skills with regard to engineering, development, slope stability and contaminated land issues.
The Role:
- To provide, geotechnical advice and design services to both internal and external clients
- To input into the development of policy and procedures related to these areas of work
- To input into the preparation of evidence on all relevant geotechnical issues at planning enquiries and appeals
- Designs, organises and supervises ground investigations for the Council and interprets their findings
- Input into the preparation and development of Quality Management procedures
- Participation in training and development of more junior engineers and technicians
- To support and promote the Council’s vision and priorities both internally and externally
- To prioritise and plan objectives under the guidance of the Team Leader and ensure they are delivered in the most cost-effective manner
- To provide complex technical and professional advice to team members in relation to engineering issues relating to geology, geotechnics and contaminated land
- To identify and implement appropriate innovations from across the industry
Key Requirements:
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Geology or other related discipline
- Chartered Member of an appropriate professional body is essential
- Working knowledge of publications and on-line resources including IHS, Special Digest 1, CIRIA SP32, CIRIA C758D, BS5930, BS1377, Series 600 etc.
- Significant experience in the assessment of ground-related problems and their solutions
- Significant experience in the design, commissioning, supervision and interpretation of ground investigations
- Experience in Project Management
- Experience of working with Civil Engineers, Architects, Planners and Building Control Officers and of dealing with customers, ideally in a local authority or other regulatory environment
- Experience in the analysis of slope stability and the design and/or appraisal of remedial measures
- Experience in the design and/or appraisal of earth retaining structures
- Experience in the investigation and treatment of mine workings
- Experience in the use of standard word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
- Experience in the use of computer modelling software.
- Experience in securing funding for ground investigation and associated works. (desirable)
- Experience in the preparation of contract documents for ground investigations, mine stabilisation, earthwork remediation and construction projects(desirable)
- Experience conversing with external regulators including the Coal Authority and the Environment Agency
