The Role
The Science Department is seeking to appoint a technician to join our team of three technicians who support the delivery of effective teaching and learning in the Science department. The role requires you to set up and maintain equipment for practical lessons, and to organise resources and materials for lessons across the age range including GCSE and A level classes. Your primary focus will be to support Physics or Chemistry but you may also be asked to assist with Biology.
Responsibilities include
- To undertake tasks that may be requested by the Head of Science and Key Stage Co-coordinators as appropriate, e.g., to assist with preparation of materials for College Open Days and other public events.
- To prepare equipment for lessons, as required by teachers, and to set it out in laboratories according to teachers’ requirements.
- To advise teachers of any shortfall in equipment requested and to help anticipate and solve problems which arise from duplicate requests.
- To clear equipment away promptly after use, checking its serviceability, cleaning it,
- To help in setting up the practical aspects of new courses, checking equipment requirements of new experiments and making simple apparatus (e.g.., for A Level practical experiments).
- To manage the storage and retrieval system of apparatus and resources in a simple and logical manner to facilitate easy access by all members of the Department.
- Whilst not in a teaching role, as a Science Technician you will be working on a regular basis in a school in a role which gives opportunity for contact with children. As such, you will be in regulated activity and an enhanced DBS check (which includes children’s barred list information) will be required in advance of appointment.
Ideal candidate
- Be qualified to degree level or proficient to A Level standard in a scientific field.
- Have experience of working in a professional laboratory.
- (Preferably) Degree in a Chemical Science / relevant discipline.
