Job Title: School Nurse

Salary: Dependent on Experience and number of shifts.
Job type: Full Time or Part Time (term time only)
Your personal requests will be considered as far as possible. The clinical shift times are as follows with a paid half hour break:
- Early shift 7.30am to 3.00pm
- Late shift 2.00pm to 9.30pm
- Night shift 9.00pm to 7.45 am
About us:
This is an amazing opportunity to join our community on our beautiful site in West Berkshire looking after the medical needs of 600 boarding girls aged 11 – 18.
As one of the leading Girls’ Independent Boarding Schools in the Country we pride ourselves on offering a supportive, creative and enriching environment for our girls.
We are currently looking for a School Nurse to join our nursing team where our on-site purpose built Medical Centre operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during term time.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- To work with the nursing team to provide total nursing care and support for all the girls, together with all GP services/clinics available to this age group
- To assist with the smooth, effective running of the Health Centre.
- To be sensitive to the needs of teenage girls away from home in a boarding school environment, and be able to communicate and empathise with them.
- To communicate well at all levels with an understanding and confidence about medical confidentiality.
- To ensure records are kept accurately and in accordance with the relevant statutory bodies and be willing to use computer systems.
- To assist the Nurse Manager to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate care programmes and procedures
- To participate in such meetings and working parties as are deemed appropriate. School Nurse June 2021
- To undertake other reasonable tasks relevant to the needs of the School as the need arises.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Be a qualified RGN with up to date registration;
- Ideally have experience of working with young people (11 -18);
- Have experience of dealing with minor injuries;
- Have the ability to relate well to adolescents and enjoy their company;
- Have a flexible approach to working hours and shifts and be prepared to help out with staff cover from time to time;
- Have a calm, warm and kind manner;
- Be efficient, with good organisational skills;
- Have the ability to communicate effectively with pupils, parents and staff in an appropriate way;
- Have a commitment to the provision of single-sex education for girls in a boarding environment;
- Have a commitment to the Downe House ethos, aims and aspirations;
- Be punctual and reliable;
- Have the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines;
- Have the ability to work as a member of a team and accept direction;
- Be proactive and positive;
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Be computer literate;
- Have good judgement and have the ability to work on own initiative;
- Be committed to personal development and ongoing training and learning;
- Have a sense of humour;
- Be prepared to sometimes work at the weekend and during the night as per the agreed rota;
- Have a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and adhere to and comply with the School’s Child Protection Policy statement at all times.
