The Company aims to accelerate the development of fusion energy by combining two emerging technologies – spherical tokamaks and high-temperature superconductors. It has already built and successfully demonstrated a number of world record setting devices in this arena. It plans to build an industrial scale fusion demonstrator by 2025 and demonstrate grid connected power by 2030. It has raised over £115m, employs over 80 people and is growing rapidly. Future developments will require the business to expand beyond its current site and complete a major plant construction project.
The Role:
To ensure the business is compliant with all relevant legislation & licence conditions pertaining to the use, storage, security, handling, control & disposal of radioactive sources & substances.
Key Responsibilities:
- Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager the Radiation Safety Specialist will assume responsibility for all aspects of radiological safety
- Co-ordinate, maintain & lead Radiation Protection Supervisors to meet legislative and business needs
- Provide authoritative advice to Senior Management and the Health and Safety Manager on all radiation safety and legal compliance matters associated with radioactive substances and radiation safety within the Company
- Provide guidance to all teams across the Company regarding the use, storage, security, handling, control and disposal of radioactive sources and substances where applicable
- Support audits & inspections by third party bodies regarding compliance with relevant legislation & licence conditions pertaining to the use, storage, security, handling, control & disposal of radioactive sources & substances
- Provide reports to, and/or attend where required, the Regulatory and Safety Advisory Committee on radiological safety and security matters
- Manage the ionising radiation monitoring systems, interpret the results and provide analysis to the business
- Act as the main point of contact with Health and Safety Executive / Environment Agency in relation to any licences / permits relating to ionising radiation or radioactive materials
- Supporting the Health and Safety Manager with other health, safety and environmental aspects (where appropriate) including for example chemical management, electrical safety and emergency response
The Candidate:
Experience:
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience in radiation science/health physics or similar discipline
- Wide ranging knowledge of radiation detection systems and related physics
- Experience with radiological legislation essential
- Experience with nuclear safeguards legislation advantageous
- Experience with non-ionising radiation (e.g. laser safety) advantageous
- NEBOSH general certificate or equivalent advantageous
Background and Personality:
- Good STEM Degree or equivalent qualification
- Qualification (or relevant experience) in radiation science/health physics
- Good level of analytic and diagnostic skills
- Good presentation, interpersonal and communication skills
- Detail oriented with a natural curiosity and scepticism
- Willingness to engage with other aspects of safety outside of radiation
- High energy, passion, resilience and commitment to achieve results
- A team player who is comfortable engaging with people of different cultures and backgrounds
