Job type: Full Time – Permanent

About us:

Supporting people experiencing homelessness in Hampshire, we offer much more than just a bed for the night. Our aim is to provide a safe, caring temporary home environment in which our vulnerable residents can rebuild their lives and benefit from our tailored support. We currently accommodate 22 people across four venues in the Winchester area with our main site in the centre of the city. We are open every day and night of the year and, with the support of our volunteers, we enable people to break the cycle of homelessness and transform their lives.

About the role:

This is a night-time and weekend role, the night-time hours are not waking hours with staff usually managing at least five hours sleep. Weekday night-time hours are from 5pm-9am and weekend hours can be day or night-time, normally three shifts per week.

You will have the opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of our residents. The Project Worker will be responsible for the safe and effective running of TWB during operational hours both at night and during the weekends. During the week, shifts begin at 5pm until 9am. Night-time shifts are not waking shifts and, as often as possible, have a second person on site as back up to avoid lone working. Weekend shifts include day or night-time work.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure that TWB is a welcoming environment for all visitors, volunteers, and residents and that those residents with more complex needs are accompanied or signposted as and when required to appropriate agencies and everyone is dealt with in a sensitive, professional, and confidential manner.
  • Assist in maintaining and promoting a place of safety for all residents, volunteers, and staff by following and complying with TWB service and organisational policies and procedures whilst paying particular attention to Safeguarding, Data Protection and Health and Safety. All residents are carefully risk assessed before being offered a bed with us.
  • Promote TWB ‘House Agreement’ to all residents.
  • Contribute to ongoing reports and statistics; and accurately and concisely record any incidents or information which may be required by the Operations Manager.
  • Attend training courses as agreed with the Operations Manager
  • Encourage, allocate and support volunteers in undertaking various duties and ensure all volunteers understand they are a vital and much appreciated resource.
  • Provide help and support with:
  • Issuing clothing, bedding, toiletries etc.,
  • ‘Safety procedures/Fire Information’ information
  • Keeping storage facilities in safe and tidy manner
  • Work with TWB Chief Executive or Operations Manager to prevent and manage challenging situations should they arise.
  • Always facilitate and support resident involvement within TWB. Ensure residents are consulted in relevant aspects of activities and encourage them all to participate with support provided.
  • Fulfil any additional duties or household tasks as requested by the Chief Executive or Operations Manager as laid down in the Project Workers daily checklist, which may be amended from time to time.
  • Project Workers must be reliable and be prepared to work flexible rota patterns and hours to fit in with staff holidays, training, and team meetings (notified in advance).
  • Be prepared to: reflect on work undertaken, encourage residents in line with a person-centred approach, and be aware of the effects of trauma.

About the candidate:

With experience of working with vulnerable adults, you will play a vital role in ensuring all residents and volunteers are welcomed, offered support and respect and provided with guidance throughout their stay. You will have a genuine desire to help those in need and work as part of a small, supportive and friendly team to perform general housekeeping tasks and ensure The Winchester Beacon policies and procedures are always complied with.

You will be flexible in hours and outlook. For the right candidate, we would consider part-time or bank shifts. Ideally candidates would live within a 20 mile radius of Winchester.
