Job Title: Plasma Physicist
Location: Milton Park, Oxfordshire, UK
Salary: £35,000 per annum
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
The Company’s mission is to transform the way the world generates power by creating a clean, safe and sustainable source of energy for current and future generations. Their innovative approach to fusion is based on two emerging technologies: spherical tokamaks (STs) and high-field magnets made from high temperature superconductors (HTS).
Combining these two technologies enables efficient fusion power production in devices much smaller than previously thought possible. To demonstrate this revolutionary technology, they’re currently operating the world’s first high field spherical tokamak, ST40; designing and building increasingly powerful high-field HTS magnets; and designing a large scale HTS tokamak, ST-F1, that will be the first device to demonstrate the viability of fusion power.
The Role:
As a result they’re looking for a talented and motivated scientist to join the physics team and conduct research into runaway electron physics in high field spherical tokamaks. The role will involve using experimental results and modelling tools to study runaways on ST40 as well as contributing to the design of disruption mitigation and runaway avoidance/mitigation techniques for future devices.
In addition to studying runaway physics this role will also include supporting ST40 experimental operations and data analysis. This may include being responsible for analysis of one or more diagnostic systems; developing integrated analysis methods to combine data from multiple systems; and planning and carrying out experiments on ST40 to advance the high field ST physics basis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop in-house runaway modelling capabilities and perform simulations for ST40 and future devices
- Contribute to runaway electron physics research on ST40
- Contribute to experimental data analysis of ST40 diagnostics relevant to runaway electrons
- Developing and performing analysis for one or more of the ST40 diagnostics systems
- Developing and performing integrated analysis methods to combine data from multiple diagnostic systems
- Report findings at internal meetings, conferences and in peer-reviewed journals
- Coordinate and contribute to relevant collaborations
