Lancaster University in collaboration with the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan is host to one of the eight National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Research Support Service (RSS) centres. This is a new national research initiative providing seamless access to research support, advice, design and collaboration, from pre-application to post-application for researchers working across the remit of NIHR in England. The centre has also been designated as the national RSS Social Care Specialist Centre.
The Role:
We are seeking to appoint a Public Involvement Manager working with our Public Involvement Lead to develop our centres Patient and Public Involvement strategy and subsequent service plans. The role will provide co-ordination in addressing our key objectives of embedding patient and public involvement across our centre, as well as working in collaboration with the other centres that make up the national RSS.
The Public Involvement Manager will work as a member of the RSS Central Co-ordination team, working closely with the Public Involvement Manager – Children and Young People, and our Equality and Diversity Lead and Engagement Manager. The role will provide support to the RSS centre methodologists in their public involvement advice provision, managing the recruitment, induction and support for service public contributors, and support centre staff and researchers to foster a culture of innovation and learning about public involvement in research. The role will lead on the development and embedding of processes, policies and practices to support meaningful public involvement across the centre’s governance structures and research support activities. The Public Involvement Manager will have a key role in: design and implementation of a programme of public involvement activities, resources and support for researchers; and evaluation of public involvement at the centre.
Candidate Requirements:
You will have well-developed knowledge of public involvement and co-production in research design and study delivery including theoretical knowledge and substantial practical experience in involving the public in research activities within the health, social care, community, or third sector. You will have excellent and effective communication skills with evidence of an ability to engage with people from a variety of backgrounds and facilitate communication between groups; excellent negotiating, diplomacy and influencing skills. Including, experience supporting committees or groups involving the public, including liaising with members, organising meetings and post-meeting follow-up including writing minutes.

The position is available for start from the 1st October 2023 and we are open to discussing flexible working arrangements including working week and days/hours worked and flexible start and finish times. This post is offered on a part-time basis. Remote working will also be considered but attendance at Lancaster University will be required on an agreed basis.
You will join us on an indefinite contract however the role remains contingent on external funding which at this time is due to come to an end on 30th September 2028.
