Job Title: Park Keeper

Location: York

Salary: £21,000 and £23,500 depending on experience and will be subject to an annual review; the first review being due in June 2024.

Garrowby Estate is a traditional agricultural estate extending to 13,250 acres, located 13 miles east of York. Garrowby Park sits in the heart of the Estate surrounded by woodland and is grazed by the in-hand flock of sheep.

The Role:

The role of Park Keeper is a new full-time position to maintain approximately 170 acres of parkland surrounding the principal residence. The successful applicant will be employed directly by Lord Irwin and will report to the Head Groundskeeper from March – October. This will involve working in conjunction with the Grounds, Farm and Forestry departments and contractors. Winter months (November – February) will be spent working with the Forestry department carrying out tree planting, maintenance, Christmas tree or firewood sales.

The ideal candidate will be cheerful and self-motivated with the ability to work alone and plan tasks or as part of a team.

Main duties will include:

  • Maintaining appearance of parkland
  • Tractor handling – topping, flail mowing
  • Pesticide application
  • Basic forestry maintenance with some chainsaw work
  • Strimming
  • Ditch clearing
  • Basic fence repairs
  • Basic machinery maintenance

The Candidate:

  • Positive and friendly attitude
  • Experience of tractor handling including attachments
  • Full, clean driving licence and ability to tow trailers
  • Self-motivated and an eye for detail
  • Ability to work on own initiative and solve problems
  • Previous experience of Estate work would be an advantage

Relevant Qualifications:

  • Tractor driving and handling
  • Pesticide application – PA1, PA2F, PA6A
  • Sit-astride and sit-aside ATV
  • Chainsaw – Maintenance and cross cutting, fell and process trees up to 380mm
  • First aid + F

We will support a successful applicant in obtaining the relevant training should they hold some but not all of the above.

Benefits:

  • The successful applicant will be entitled to join the pension scheme and the employer will contribute 6% of salary.
  • Holiday entitlement is 29 working days including Public Holidays. A cycle to work scheme is offered.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to commence work no later than 1st March 2023.

Details:

Working hours are 8am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday with a 15 minute break in the morning and a 45 minute break for lunch from March to October. During the winter months November to February working hours are 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday with a 15 minute break in the morning and a 30 minute break for lunch.
