The Role:
Are you a qualified Vehicle Mechanic, enthusiastic, committed to service excellence and want the opportunity to manage their busy Motor Transport Workshops?
The Council is looking for someone to manage the daily workshop functions in order to operate an effective, flexible, customer focused and fully compliant maintenance facility. They maintain and service a large range of vehicles (from specialist LGV municipal vehicles to vans) and over 200 pieces of plant equipment (from ride on grass mowers to leaf blowers).
They also operate a Class 4 and Class 7 MOT Station with both an internal and external customer base and pride on serving the public.
The main accountability of this role is the safe, effective and comprehensive vehicle/plant maintenance delivery of all the Council fleet; ensuring the fleet is fully compliant, successfully supporting our front-line services and the post holder must have a thorough understanding of the Operator’s Licence, fulfilling the Council’s legal obligations.

- H&S, Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement Responsibilities
- Management of Stores / Supplies and Maintenance Contracts
- General Central Transport Organisation (CTO) Managerial Duties
The Candidate:
The right candidate will be/have:
- Comprehensive experience operating as a motor mechanic.
- Operational management experience in a related or similar facility at a supervisory level.
- Experience of developing service area to maximise efficiency and minimise costs.
- Working knowledge of relevant transport and vehicle maintenance legislation.
- Ability to manage and co-ordinate staff resource.
- Experience of managing a Motor Transport Workshops and managing a team of mechanics.
- Experience of managing the maintenance requirements of a medium to large scale fleet.
- Experience of managing maintenance compliancy to ensure that the undertakings of the ‘O’ license are not compromised.
- Experience of managing health and safety and safe working practices.
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Motor Mechanics.
- Good standard of ICT.
Desirable criteria:
- Operator License Awareness Training (OLAT)
- Certified MOT Vehicle Examiner
- A minimum of an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in management or supervisory
- Category C HGV Driving Licence
- IOSH Health and Safety qualification
- Experience of operating fleet management software
- Member of an appropriate governing body such as CILTS or IRTEC
