Job Title: Freelance Journalists and Camera Operators

Location: UK, Worldwide / Flexible Location

Salary: Dependent on assignment

Job type: Contract, Full time

Who we are:

Media First is one of the UK’s most established and successful media training companies.

We help our clients with a wide range of communications challenges and are known as specialists in communications training.

We regularly train senior leaders from the FTSE250 to communicate with clarity, compassion and confidence.

About the role:

We’re looking to grow our freelance training team to help us deliver our bespoke communications training courses.

We’re looking for freelance journalists to deliver bespoke media training courses, designed by our expert team. Our specialities include proactive media skills, social media, crisis communication, message development, writing skills and presentations training – all delivered in-person and via Zoom.

One of the keys to our success is the ratio of trainers to delegates. We like to work with one trainer to three delegates. Many courses are one-to-one. And our journalist tutors also get support from a camera operator and an off-site telephone journalist.

We are especially keen to recruit working journalists who are aware of the current challenges reporters face and the opportunities this creates for business and third sector spokespeople, and comms and media teams.

We are also seeking freelance camera operators with their own camera, lighting, playback and audio equipment.

We’re based in Reading, but our courses are delivered online and in-person across the country – and globally.

We need freelance resources across the UK, and the ability to travel is crucial.

For our part we can offer a steady supply and wide variety of rewarding projects, working with high-profile, innovative and up-coming clients.

Whenever you work for Media First, you know you are backed by our small, but perfectly formed operations and account management team.

We take care of all your administrative and logistical needs, leaving you free to focus on the specific requirements of each of our clients and their bespoke development needs.

This is your opportunity to shine, working alongside a team that works with some of the country’s biggest brands.

Who are we looking for?

Communications and media trainers

We pride ourselves on the realism and credibility of our training. So, our trainers need to have an extensive journalistic background, preferably across broadcast and print. Many of our trainers are generalists, but we are also keen to meet trainers who specialise in different sectors – for example, finance, healthcare, sustainability and IT.

You’ll also have demonstrable experience in delivering training to senior delegates – ideally both online and in-person.

Although experience in delivering training is vital, we will support you with a well-thought-out on-boarding programme so you understand more about our business ethos, values and training methodology.

Social media trainers

Social media is an integral part of the modern-day communications and marketing mix. So we need more trainers who can help our clients regardless of their confidence and skill level.

Some delegates will need strategic guidance on the business benefits of social media or perhaps assistance in development a social media strategy. Others may require support in learning how to put these strategies into place and how to use the various social media channels.

An ideal social media trainer will be able to help all our delegates regardless of confidence levels. This means an in-depth knowledge of all of the main social media channels; Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, as well as any emerging technology.

Camera operators

Our camera operators need to be skilled in capturing broadcast-quality audio and video.

You’ll be flexible on times and locations and confident enough to adapt quickly to a range of largely office-based shooting environments, working with high-profile, senior business clients.

You will have your own kit and be able to record and quickly playback realistic, interview and presentation footage captured in several formats, including sofa style, down-the-line, doorstep, and outside broadcast.

Experience operating a live streaming studio would be a plus. As would anyone with directing and editing skills and previous experience supporting media training courses or working within the mainstream media.

What can we offer you?

We offer competitive freelance salary rates, expenses and a regular stream of work.

Importantly, we offer you the chance to be part of a growing business and the support so that you can continue to develop your training skills.
