Job Title: Magnet Engineer
Location: Milton Park, Abingdon
Salary: Competitive
Job Type: Full Time, Perm (37.5 hours per week)
The Company aims to accelerate the adoption of fusion power generation by combining two emerging technologies – spherical tokamaks and high-temperature superconductors (HTS).
The company was originally established in 2009 to design and develop small spherical tokamaks and compact fusion reactors for a range of applications. Since then, the Company has unlocked a new route to scalable fusion power that is cost-effective and does not require huge infrastructure and capital expenditure.
The technology will revolutionise the world’s energy production – it will be possible to produce more energy, more cheaply and with fewer harmful side effects (e.g. with no long-term nuclear waste or carbon emissions). They aim to accelerate the development of fusion energy by combining two emerging technologies – spherical tokamaks and high-temperature superconductors (HTS).
The company’s innovation has been featured on Channel 4 news, BBC News Click and Reuters news channel and they received a Technology Pioneer Award at the World Economic Forum on 2016. This is the chance to join a fast-growing high technology company with an agile, dynamic team and to tackle the challenge of a lifetime.
The Role:
They are now seeking a Magnet Engineer to work in the HTS magnet team. The successful candidate will be contributing to the HTS magnet technology development including conductor evaluation, coil modelling, quench protection, coil design and coil fabrication.
This is a core role in the pioneering work taking place on HTS magnet development at the Company. The successful candidate will have experience of working with superconducting materials, either HTS or Low Temperature Superconductors (LTS), to fabricate magnet coil structures.
A rounded knowledge of the electrical, thermal and mechanical issues affecting magnet design is highly desirable. A methodical, analytic mindset is expected as well as being organised, self-driven and able to work to defined scopes and timescales. Have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team of engineers designing new and complex devices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leading magnet development projects and sub-projects
- Development of HTS magnet design and component design
- Contributing to the development of HTS magnet simulation tools, predominantly using Matlab
- Contributing to the development of HTS magnet structures, quench protection components and magnet assembly tooling
