Job Title: Machining & Testing Technician (Abingdon)

Location: Abingdon

Salary: £22,000-£24,000

Job Type: Working 37 hours per week, we have onsite parking and are easily accessible by public transport.

The Company:

We are looking for a Machining and Testing Technician to join a small team based at our metallurgical testing facility, Metaltest UK.

Working closely alongside both the Deputy and Laboratory Manager, this role will help to facilitate the mechanical and metallographic testing of a variety of metal samples to produce accurate and reliable data for our customers who come from sectors involving cryogenic pressure vessels, performance vehicles, energy solutions, and ship building. This is a critical role for the business and having the ability to manage the workload and meet agreed timelines will be essential.

This role would ideally suit someone with a keen interest in metallurgy and who has experience of machining and manual based tasks.

The Role:

Preparing and testing of metal samples of various types and geometrics using a variety of mechanical and metallographic techniques according to defined methodologies and standards in order to produce reliable and accurate data for our customers.

The preparation will mainly be in machining samples in preparation for testing using lathes, milling machines, angle grinders, ban saws, and hand tools and then testing those samples against various global standards. These tests will include tensile, bend, hardness, fracture, impact and metallographic tests.

Liaising with customers to help facilitate their testing requirements, organise their enquiries and orders and maintain strict customer confidentiality. This will involve booking jobs on to the Metaltest system, completing reports of the results for presentation to the customer or to their own senior colleagues.

Contributing to maintaining the high-level of health and safety for everyone within the premises and supporting this through keeping the machines maintained, documents stored correctly, the laboratory tidy and organised and following set processes and procedure. All of these elements will assist in Metaltest maintaining their external accreditations.

There will also be additional adhoc work expected from this position which will include participating in Continuous Improvement activities, carrying out internal audits, general administration work to support the business.

The Candidate:

  • An Engineering based qualification is preferred
  • Experience with machining and manual based tasks is highly desirable and an understanding of welding would be a bonus
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. This role will require answering the telephone and speaking with customers
  • A strong and conscientious work ethic
  • Detail orientated with good organisational skills
  • The ability to follow instructions and work well in a small team
  • A flexible attitude and the ability to work well under pressure
