What does a Library Manager do at Hillingdon?
We are recruiting to two specific full-time, permanent Library Manager posts, managing across two branch libraries:
- Northwood Hills and Harefield
- South Ruislip and Eastcote
The recruitment process will be for both posts, but the preferences of successful candidates will be taken into account.
The core purpose of this role is to manage a team of staff in the day-to-day running of a public library service in two locations. You will be responsible for the branch team and building management. You will interact with residents, exploring ways to improve the service offer to meet customer needs and expectations.
The Library Manager attends and contributes to regular team meetings and completes projects for the benefit of the service under the direction of the group manager.
You will be expected to support, develop and implement initiatives linked to the library service strategy themes of:
- Reading, Literacy and Culture
- Health and Wellbeing
- Improving Digital Services and Inclusion
- Information and Learning
- Sustainable Service Delivery
You will motivate and performance manage your team to ensure they are energised, enthusiastic and offering the best possible service.

About you:
You are a positive and enthusiastic person with experience and skill in leading and inspiring teams, delivering front line services and working with partners to develop ideas and initiatives. A track record of serving a diverse customer base and supervising a team is essential.
You will need to have excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly with customers and team members both verbally and in writing. You are confident delegating work and motivating your team members. You are able to set boundaries whilst ensuring the library is an understanding, welcoming environment.
You are organised and efficient, able to set and follow procedures. You are very flexible with both your time and your thinking to solve problems and deliver a high standard of service to Hillingdon residents.
Library managers are ambassadors for the library service, and representatives of their libraries as community hubs.
