The School of Creative and Cultural Business seeks to appoint a part-time Lecturer in Journalism to join its dynamic team. This important role is required to contribute to the high-quality delivery within the rapidly evolving field of journalism at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The Role:
Your significant knowledge and subject expertise will be evidenced by related teaching and research and/or relevant work experience and you’ll be capable of fostering and developing collaborative links with academic, business, charitable and public-sector partners. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with experience and knowledge of contemporary journalism in one or more of the following areas: online journalism, print journalism, broadcast journalism and production, freelance journalism, data journalism, diversity and inclusion, international affairs. Alternatively, you may have experience in a closely related media or communications field.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development and enhancement of this subject area. The School has developed significant expertise in the creative industries and has ambitious research plans going forward. The successful candidate will be expected to play a strategic role in extending this body of knowledge.
Duties Include:
- Carries out designated teaching (e.g., via lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, laboratory work, field trips, studio work, practical’s etc) and assessment duties in areas of expertise, or as otherwise required by the Head of School.
- Participates in the development and preparation of teaching materials.
- Provides tutorial and personal guidance for students.
- Supervises undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
- Develops and maintains expertise in subject areas. Participates in subject and course development.
- Undertakes appropriate administrative responsibilities (e.g., year tutor, student selection, assessment co-ordination, placement organisation, timetabling, maintaining attendance records etc).
- Maintains working relationships with other Schools/Departments/Units within the University, as necessary, for the smooth operation and development.
- Actively pursues and/or encourages research activities (e.g., writing for publication, developing own research, supervising research students, establishing externally funded research projects, presenting at conferences etc).
- Establishes and maintains relevant professional and industrial links, as necessary, for the effective operation of the School’s courses (e.g., engagement in work of external bodies, educational and professional).
- Represents the School on relevant University committees and the School and University on external committees.
Person Specification:
Essential Requirements –
First Degree or post degree qualification in a related subject area.
Knowledge –
Significant knowledge and understanding of Journalism.
Experience –
Significant experience of Journalism either practise-based or academic teaching/research.
Desirable Requirements –
Qualification and Professional Memberships –
PhD in a related subject area.
Knowledge –
Specific experience and knowledge of online journalism, print journalism, broadcast journalism and production, freelance journalism, data journalism, diversity and inclusion, international affairs, or other related fields and roles.
