The University of Chester is a public university, it originates as the first purpose-built teacher training college in the UK. As a university, we now occupy five campus sites in and around Chester, one in Warrington, and a University Centre in Shrewsbury. The Role
The Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Chester has a national reputation for innovation and excellence in undergraduate teaching, learning and assessment in geography and natural hazard management. The Department is seeking to augment its human geography team through the appointment of a lecturer committed to innovative and inclusive teaching.
The Department’s BA and BSc Geography programmes embrace a range of themes in human geography and can be studied as a Single Hons or Combined Hons subject. Human geographers in the department teach across a range of sub-disciplines – including urban, social, economic, cultural and political geography.
The Ideal Candidate
Qualifications
- Good undergraduate degree in relevant discipline (Geography, Urban Studies, Planning, etc.)
- PhD (achieved, submitted or close to submission) in relevant subject
- PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in HE or Fellowship of Advance HE (or willingness to achieve within a specified period of time).
Knowledge and experience
- Experience of teaching and assessing undergraduate students.
Skills and personal attributes
- Strong interpersonal skills, including communication abilities (verbal, written, digital).
- An ability to support students both academically and pastorally, including on residential fieldwork in the UK and abroad
Main Responsibilities
- Facilitate students learning through lectures, tutorials, seminars, fieldwork and associated assessments, at undergraduate levels.
- Produce high-quality teaching and learning material to support and develop student learning, making use of digital tools (e.g. Moodle, MS Teams) in line with institutional guidance.
- Provide effective and timely one-to-one (verbal and digital) communication with colleagues and students.
- Engage in research and scholarly activity to inform teaching.
- Act as module leader as required
- Collaborate with academic colleagues on course development and curriculum enhancements.
- Active membership of departmental committees or task groups.
- Where appropriate, engage in liaison activity with schools, employers and organisations in Chester/Cheshire and the surrounding region.
- Enhance the quality of taught modules/programmes through engagement with existing quality assurance mechanisms.
- Undertake peer mentoring and review of colleagues as required.
