Job Title: Head of Technical and Compliance

The Company is a leading pet food manufacturer whose industry knowledge spans over 135 years.
The Company has a portfolio of brands offers a variety of products for pets and wild animals under its brands. Each brand offers a unique insight into animals from dogs to ducks and produces high-quality products that cater to a wide variety of consumer needs.
As a trusted partner, the Company provide private label goods including extruded food, wet food and retorted trays, and baked fresh meat treats. The business also offers additional services such as packaging design, fulfilment and logistics.
The company is now looking ahead to 2021 with plans to further strengthen the team with a Head of Technical and Compliance. The role will be based at the new state of the art production facility on Whitebirk Industrial Estate, Blackburn and will be responsible for product safety, quality and legality spanning handover from NPD through to delivery to the consumer.
Key Responsibilities:
This is a dynamic and multifaceted role requiring the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at any given time. An early focus in this role will be to get the site ready for its first BRC accreditation. Other responsibilities will include:
- Point of contact for nutritional and feeding queries
- The control of product specifications
- Technical approval of all artwork
- Manage the hygiene team
- Develop and maintain the Hygiene Management System
- Main contact and lead for audits and site visits
- Ensure improvement plans for customer complaints and non-conformances
- Maintain QMS and HACCP standards / files / systems
- Provide technical support to QA, production & commercial teams when required
- If appropriate attend relevant industry related association meetings e.g. PFMA
- Maintain claim substantiation files
- Conduct raw material / supplier risk assessments
- Be the sites contact with Trading Standards and DEFRA in relation to product integrity
- Source suitable suppliers for raw materials to ensure a full traceability system through the supply chain
Skills and Experiences:
Essential
- 5 years’ experience as a Technical manager or Quality manager in a food company
- Strong communicator at all levels with the ability to coach and influence others
- Able to drive efficiencies whilst maintaining product quality & keeping costs down
- Advanced food safety qualification
- Intermediate HACCP qualification
- Experience of delivering BRC accreditation
- An understand animal nutrition
- PC Literate (Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
- Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities
- Excellent analytical and investigations skills and ability to report on complaints and non-conformances
- A dynamic self-starter with a positive, enthusiastic can-do attitude
Desirable
- An understanding of extrusion
- Experience of baking and manufacturing of pet products
