About us:
Mathematics is one of the most popular and successful subjects at Downe House. As of September 2022, the Department consists of 11 experienced members of staff, (6 full-time, 3 part-time and 2 individual tutors), including the Head of Department and Second in Department.
The department has five dedicated classrooms and one smaller room mainly used for Sixth Form teaching, as well as a Mathematics Workroom and a Head of Department’s Office. All of the dedicated classrooms have interactive whiteboards, and one is equipped with 20-networked PC’s. Downe House is a Microsoft Showcase School and as such all pupils use Microsoft Surfaces and the Department makes extensive use of OneNote and Teams as well as other appropriate apps/software.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- In consultation with appropriate colleagues, oversee as necessary, the production of syllabuses and schemes of work in line with School policy;
- To ensure that students’ work, performance and records of assessments are produced, assessed, and kept in line with School policy and national requirements;
- To participate in the assessment of new students entering the School as required by the Headmistress, including matters pertaining to Entrance and Scholarship examinations;
- To stimulate and encourage students to a high standard of interest and achievement in the subject area, ensuring that the needs of each individual are met;
- To arrange pupil participation in internal and external events as appropriate;
- To liaise and work with the Learning Skills Department to ensure that the needs of each individual are being met;
- To provide a lively and stimulating environment in which teaching can occur by ensuring that rooms allocated to the department have attractive and stimulating displays;
- To oversee appropriate measures to ensure that all equipment and departmental areas are ready for students’ use in good time;
- To deal with disciplinary problems in any class taught by a member of the department and generally throughout the School in a firm but caring manner, and liaise with the Deputy Head (Academic) in any matters of serious concern;
- To be responsible for the implementation of the Health & Safety Policy and to ensure the safety of all staff and students within the department, and to make staff and students themselves aware of safety, and report back to the Director of Estates, Property and Services any areas of concern;
- To be aware of and to implement the School’s policy in relation to the Children’s Act (1989);
The Successful Candidate will be:
- Be a good honours graduate and ideally hold a teaching qualification.
- Have experience of teaching at Sixth Form level.
- Have experience or ability to manage a small team.
- Have the ability to contribute to the strategic vision of the department.
- Have ability to teach bright, highly-motivated pupils.
- Have excellent subject knowledge.
- Be up-to-date with current thinking and practices.
- Be competent in the use of ICT.
- Be able to be an effective Tutor.
- Have leadership qualities with the ability to manage a large team.
