Job Title: Control Systems Engineer

The Company aims to accelerate the development of fusion energy by combining two emerging technologies – spherical tokamaks and high-temperature superconductors.
The Company was originally established in 2009 to design and develop small Spherical Tokamaks and compact fusion reactors for a range of applications. Since then, the strategy has evolved to prioritise building a pilot plant to exceed fusion energy breakeven.
The Role:
The candidate will be part of the Systems Engineering team. The team is responsible for producing the control systems, software, and user interfaces that are used by the operations teams to run experiments.
Main Responsibilities:
- Gathering requirements from internal customers
- Designing, implementing, commissioning, and signing off projects
- Integrating a new system into the plant infrastructure
- Interfacing with third party equipment
- Writing control logic
- Designing and deploying user interface screens
- Fault finding and debugging
- Working to tight deadlines
Contacts and Communication
- Liaising with equipment suppliers and manufacturers
- Liaising with system owners, project engineers, and project technicians
- Liaising with the systems engineering team
Personal Skills and Attributes:
Essential:
- Strong knowledge of LabVIEW
- LabVIEW CLD or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge
- Experience with communication methods e.g. TCP, UDP, RS232, 485, MODBUS
- Software engineering background
- To have used a version control system (e.g. CVS, SVN, Hggit)
- Software and data acquisition electronics debugging skills,
Desirable:
- LabVIEW CLD, CLA, CLED
- Exerience with National Instruments’ cRIO
- An Engineering or Computer Science degree
- Additional languages e.g. C++, Python, MATLAB, Simulink
- Linux (CentOS 7) experience
- D-TACQ data acquisition
- Experience of software engineering test practices
- Database development experience, MDS+, MySQL, Cassandra, Mongo
- Experience developing real-time software and systems
- Experience working in a research environment
- Previous experience in a science or engineering facility
- Experience in I&C Engineering
- Low voltage electronics or signal filtering

Essential:
- Software engineering aptitude is more essential than a degree
Desirable:
- Engineering or computer science degree
- A Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD)
- Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA)
- Certified LabVIEW Embedded Developer (CLED)
Personal skill and Qualities:
- Self-motivation
- Effective written and oral communication skills
