St Edmund’s College offers modern facilities in a magnificent country setting in rural Hertfordshire, providing a safe and stimulating environment for young minds.

We require an enthusiastic individual to create and run a careers programme for Years 7 to 13 which is age appropriate and which meets the Gatsby Benchmarks

The successful candidate will:

  • Build and maintain a wide range of resources to inform students about potential career paths, arranging appropriate careers guidance opportunities for students, including annual careers fairs and bespoke, careers advice.
  • Work closely with the Head of PSHE to co-ordinate career guidance with PSHE lessons.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.
  • To create and run a careers programme for Year 7 to 13 which is age appropriate for each year group and which meets the Gatsby Benchmarks
  • To build and maintain a wide range of resources, both digital and physical, to help and inform pupils about potential career paths.
  • To work closely with the Head of PSHE to co-ordinate career guidance with PSHE lessons.
  • To operate an appointment system by which pupils can book times to meet individually with you for bespoke careers advice, with sixth formers using study periods; being available during the lunch break and outside lesson times for appointments with non-sixth formers.
  • To source, invite and host external speakers / providers.
  • To keep brief records of meetings held and advice given.
  • To advise parents on their children’s career aspirations and prospects and to answer any questions they may have.
  • To encourage pupils to gain work experience, and where possible to help to facilitate this.
  • To support the work of the Head of Rhetoric (Head of Sixth Form) and the Higher Education Applications Co-ordinator in leading sixth formers through the process of application to Higher Education, Apprenticeships etc.
  • To support the work of the Medical Applications Co-ordinator and MedSoc.
  • To work with the CCF and local Armed Forces Liaison Officers in supporting pupils considering a career in the Armed Forces.
  • To organise an annual Careers Fair, with help from the Alumni Officer.
  • With the help of the Alumni Officer, to build relationships with alumni across a range of professions who might be willing to offer help and advice to current Edmundians.
  • To monitor and evaluate the careers provision on a regular basis, and to report from time to time to Governors and SLT.
  • With the SLT, to consider the introduction of external testing / profiling (Morrisby etc) and, if adopted, to manage the process.
  • To have, and to sustain, an excellent knowledge of a wide range of career pathways and to proactively seek further knowledge and training as career pathways evolve.
  • To build and maintain a network of contacts across a wide range of careers.
  • To liaise with Careers staff in other schools in order to share ideas and experiences and to ensure best practice.
  • To manage the Careers budget appropriately.

The post will involve close contact with, and a high degree of responsibility for, children and young adults. The majority of this will be regulated activity.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. As with all College staff members, you will therefore be responsible for providing a safe environment in which children can learn.
