This role will be mainly based in our Southend Hospital laboratory but will require flexibility to also work at our Basildon sites, when required. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for leading the coagulation section which will require a high degree of coagulation scientific skill and clinical knowledge of anticoagulant dosing. Pathology First operates over three sites using a hub and spoke model. Our hub site offers a high throughput service for our non-urgent community work, and specialist testing comprising factor assays, haemoglobinopathy screening and flow cytometry. Our two hospital laboratories at Southend and Basildon provide urgent testing for acute admissions and inpatients with a full hospital transfusion service, this includes serving the cardiothoracic centre at Basildon, and a substantial oncology and haemato-oncology workload. The Southend site boasts an anticoagulant clinic where Biomedical Scientists use INR Star software for warfarin dosing. This role will also involve rotating across the coagulation, haematology and transfusion sections in order to be able to support the out of hours service. Our laboratories receive approximately 1.2M FBC and coagulation samples and 100K transfusion samples per year. The department is equipped with Werfen ACL-TOPs, Beckman Coulter DXHs, Ortho Visions and Bio-Rad D100s. The main IT platform for all sites is Clinisys WinPath Enterprise.
Key Responsibilities:
- You will need to be flexible to fit in with our multi-site, around the clock shift pattern (unsocial shifts attract additional payments)
- You need to provide leadership in this fast-paced environment
- You will ensure effective management of the Southend haematology laboratory and anticoagulant clinic. The Southend anticoagulation clinic provides a near patient testing clinic, remote dosing and closely links with the trust anticoagulant specialist nurses, who provide expert dosing and clinical leadership. When rotated to the Hub site you will be expected to be able be able to lead and develop the specialist coagulation testing service
- You will manage staffing, equipment and consumables, providing highly specialised knowledge and experience of coagulation and haematology analyser platforms and associated equipment
- You will have a team of staff to line manage and would be able to perform people management tasks effectively and in line with HR policies
- You will need to be conversant with the main laboratory information management system, and with middle-ware packages.
- A thorough understanding of process flow is required
- There is a quality management system to ISO 15189 standards, within which you will be required to operate, particularly getting involved in audit and the investigation of adverse occurrences.
The role includes a considerable commitment to providing training in haematology and coagulation at all levels.
Qualifications and Experience:
- HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist
- MSc/FIBMS/IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma or equivalent, in a relevant subject
- Able to work across three sites as required, including hospitals which operate 24-hours
- Able to work with a high degree of accuracy, numeracy, interpretive skills, and good problem-solving skills
- Able to demonstrate a good knowledge and experience of industry standard laboratory information management systems
- Specialist knowledge of coagulation testing and anticoagulant dosing
- Experience in a patient facing environment
