The Role
The deputy SENCO will oversee the day-to-day provision of SEN at EOB Academy Letchworth ensuring that the progress and achievement of SEND students is promoted to ensure they have equal opportunities to access their education. The role will be student focused and will ensure high standards and expectations for both SEN students and staff.
Key Requirements:
- Delivery of a vocational based enrichment programme that supports students’ pastoral needs including social, communication and development of employability skills
- Overseeing and ensuring that all SEND students have access to a named key worker, who will conduct weekly key working 1-1 sessions with all students, which is documented and reported to the SENCO on progress made
- Oversee the LSA support for SEN students ensuring that they have direction in how best to support these students and delegate roles where needed (under the direction of the SENCO) e.g., key worker responsibilities
- Management of the pastoral support for students including documenting and reporting on a centralised MIS system where required
- Work with education partners to ensure that any pastoral/enrichment tasks that are required are carried out and any sessions delivered are documented on the necessary MIS system
- Regular liaison with the SENCO/Education lead updating on the progress of SEN students including reporting of any issues and escalating any safeguarding concerns to the DSL where required
- Maintain up-to-date information on SEND including record keeping
- Attend meetings where required on issues to do with SEND
- Attend and minute EHCP review meetings including completion of paperwork where required
- Attend training sessions where required that contribute to the CPD (continual professional development) of the individual
- Maintain day-to-day contact with parents/carers of SEND students
- Lead small groups of student intervention where required
This list is not exhaustive and may require additional tasks under the direction of the SENCO/Education Lead which promote the opportunities and prospects for students with SEND.
Minimum requirements of the role – essential:
- Experience of working in the education sector to include supporting students with SEND, preferably within the Further Education/Key Stage 4 and above education setting
- Experience in overseeing SEND enrichment delivery including managing the key working relationship with students, mentoring and 1-1 support sessions, under the direction of the SENCO
- Experience in planning and delivering intervention support for SEND students
- Experience of managing the day-to-day relationship with stakeholders including parents and professionals alike
- Managing your own workload and using initiative to prioritise the needs of SEND students
Desirable:
- Previous experience working as a deputy SENCO/Pastoral Lead/HLTA overseeing SEND provision and staff
- Previous experience of working with SEND students who are supported by an EHCP and a robust understanding of the EHCP assessment process
- Understanding of the SEND reforms and Code of Practice (2014)
