About us:

The key role for the Assistant Grounds Manager is to ensure the grounds are maintained to an excellent standard and to provide a professional impression to all visitors, parents, pupils and staff. In addition, as a member of the maintenance support staff, the Assistant Grounds Manager will undertake a range of duties concerned with the school premises and support the smooth operation of the sports facility.

The Assistant Grounds Manager will be based at our four-acre Activity Centre at Canons Park, Edgeware. Boys from Arnold House travel to Canons Park for Games each school afternoon throughout the year and the site is used for lessons on weekday mornings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • undertaking grounds maintenance duties, eg grass cutting, hedge trimming, strimming, weeding and clearance of leaves
  • undertaking grounds manager duties, eg overmarking of sports areas (pitches, squares and athletic tracks)
  • maintaining artificial /synthetic playing areas
  • undertaking horticultural operations, eg ground preparation, planting, turfing, seeding and pruning
  • undertake the erection, dismantling and maintenance of sports equipment
  • in the absence of the Head Grounds Manager liaising closely with Games staff and external parties to ensure the availability of sports pitches and equipment
  • ensuring the highest standards of work are achieved in a timely and efficient manner
  • providing effective materials and machinery management to ensure all equipment is correctly stored and maintained
  • ensuring work areas and the maintenance shed is kept clean, tidy and secure at all times
  • maintaining cleanliness and general tidiness of all external hard areas
  • clearing leaves, snow, ice, moss and detritus as appropriate, including treatment of surfaces with salt etc
  • carrying out minor works in order to improve the site as required by the Bursar
  • assisting, when necessary, with the erection and maintenance of school equipment
  • opening and closing of the School premises, including gates, doors, windows, fire exits, etc for the purpose of School use, lettings, out of school hours functions, maintenance and emergency services.

The candidate:

  • Level 1 or 2 horticultural qualifications.
  • Experience working with children or young people.
  • Experience of working as a ground’s person in a sports facility.
  • A sound understanding of the legislation relating to chemicals and dangerous substances (COSHH).
  • Evidence of honesty and reliability.
  • Capable of working under pressure and on your own initiative is required.

The post is full-time for 37.5 hours per week, although hours are shorter in
winter (8am-3pm) and longer in the summer (8am-5pm). There is 30 minutes for lunch and some weekend and evening work is expected throughout the year to tie in with school functions and events, with additional hours for external lettings on a rota basis to be paid as overtime through the summer months of May to July.
