Job Title: Handy / Grounds Person

Salary: £23,114 – £24,294 (Plus £689 Outer London Fringe Allowance) salary depending upon skills and experience
Job Type: Full time, Permanent – Working 37 hours a week Monday to Thursday 07.30 till 16:00 (½ hour lunch break) and Friday 07.30 till 12 :30. Overtime shifts may also be available)
The Role:
We have an opportunity for a full time Handy / Grounds Person to support the staff of a small but busy grounds maintenance team within the Parish of Ash. This is an opportunity to help maintain parks and open spaces, floral displays, carry out grass cutting and assisting with general building maintenance duties
You will need a degree of physical fitness and an aptitude for working outdoors, along with an interest in gardening and a desire to learn on the job. Some knowledge and experience of horticulture, manual handling and working on highways would also be useful but not essential in this role.
Responsibilities:
Handyperson Duties:
Responsible for completing routine maintenance, undertaking repairs and tackling a range of other practical tasks. You will be expected to be versatile, with multiple duties and responsibilities, including:
- Plumbing: Resolving basic problems such as installing new taps, sinks and toilets, and repairing leaks.
- Electrical: Replacing bulbs, rewiring sockets, installing alarms, doorbells, security cameras and thermostats.
- Decorating: Painting walls and ceilings, touching up skirting boards and door frames, sanding floors and other wooden surfaces.
- Repairs and Maintenance: Installing cabinets, doors, countertops and flooring including tiles, carpets or other hardwood and laminate aspects including damaged window frames.
- Carpentry: Resolving basic problems such as designing and building event floats
General Gardening and Maintenance Duties:
Responsible for sports pitch preparation, building maintenance, tending hanging baskets, weeding, grass cutting, hedge cutting, cleaning of public toilets, cemetery maintenance, litter picking and emptying bins. Any other maintenance necessary on any of the following sites:
- Two Allotment Sites: Shawfield Allotments off Shawfield Road & Harpers Allotments off Guildford Road
- Gardens: War Memorial Gardens, Ash Hill Road, Ash Highway Amenity Gardens, throughout Ash & Wharf Amenity Area, Ash Village Area
- Cemetery: Grass cutting, litter picking, removal of dead flowers, Grave digging (if applicable)
- Recreation Grounds: Ash Common Recreation Ground, Ash Hill Road, Ash Centre Car Park, Children’s Play Area, Flower Gardens and Borders, The Ash Centre & Ash Parish Council Offices
- Shawfield Play Area, Shawfield Recreation Ground: Car Park & Children’s Play Area
- Harpers Recreation Ground, Guildford Road, Ash: Car Park, Children’s Play Area & Football Pitch
- Carrington Recreation Ground, Vale Road, Ash Vale: Children’s Play Area, Car Park, Two Tennis Courts & Four Basketball Court
- Ashley Park Play Area, Lea Close, Ash: A small children’s park
- Coronation Gardens: Car Park, Tennis Courts & Flower Gardens
- Watering of Hanging Baskets and Bedding Plants
- Cleaning Duties: General Cleaning duties in the Ash Centre and Public Toilets in the Parish
- Ash Parish Council Events: To attend in a working capacity the following events: Ash Parish Council’s Annual Village Fete, Annual Remembrance Day Service and Parade Ash Parish Council’s Annual Christmas Fantasia this includes setting up prior to the event and dismantling/clearing up after each event
Any other duties commensurate with the level of responsibility of the post as designated by the Clerk to the Council/Charge Hand.
Person Specification:
Essential
- Good general education
- Experience of working in an outdoor environment in all weathers and in difficult conditions
- Comfortable with Manual handing tasks
- Ability to listen, effectively extract important information
- Able to work within a team
- The capability to produce work of a consistently high standard
- Adaptability, to do lots of practical tasks
- Good time keeping
- Self-reliant and self-motivated
Desirable:
- A licence valid to drive in the UK in order to drive Parish vehicles around sites would be an advantage
