Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Location: Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex
Salary: £45,000 – £48,000 depending on experience

About the role:
You will design IC engine solutions for explosive atmosphere applications, industrial truck conversions/solutions for UK Ex, ATEX and IEC Ex compliant machines in a low volume, customer projects environment. The role also includes customer consultancy covering electro-mechanical equipment suitability for hazardous area applications.
Main Responsibilities:
- Accessing project requirements and creation of project specification documents.
- Creation of concept designs for varying engine models for explosive atmosphere applications both mobile and static equipment.
- Design of IC engine inlet and exhaust systems to relevant global technical standards.
- Component selection and liaising with suppliers.
- Design of exhaust gas heat exchangers.
- Power, thermal and fluid flow calculations and analysis.
- Coolant system design, including specification of air blast radiators.
- Preparation of general arrangement drawings for technical sales support.
- Collaboration with design team for production of full sets of detail production drawings, including checking and approval.
- Conceive design solutions to achieve optimal execution cost.
- Specify product test requirements to support compliance activities.
- Produce documentation to support product certification and when required prepare product risk assessments.
- Prepare technical reports for customer consultancy projects.
- Work with customers to reach design approval on larger projects.
- Hands on testing and problem solving on prototype builds.
- Visits to customer sites for project meetings, equipment commissioning and product testing.
- Pre and post-sale customer technical support and POA activity.
- Research into relevant emerging technologies and new IC engine models.
- Comply with all Company policies, procedures and work instructions including health and safety.
- Comply with and promote the Company’s values and behaviours.
- Carry out other reasonable duties requested by management.
Some travel, including overseas trips, may be required to visit clients and suppliers. Extra hours may sometimes be necessary to meet deadlines
About you:
You will need be an experienced and motivated mechanical engineering professional with demonstratable achievements in the design of rotating mechanical equipment systems, a strong understanding of thermodynamics and hold a degree or HND in mechanical engineering or combined course where mechanical and thermal fundamentals can be demonstrated.
A good understanding of mechanical/electrical system integration, experience of BOM generation and knowledge of metal fabrication and machining are essential. You should also be proficient in using AutoCAD 2D & 3D, have excellent project management skills and strong analytical skills.
Ideally, you’ll have experience of designing heat exchangers and engine coolant systems and/or IC engine inlet, exhaust and drive systems although this is not essential. Experience of working in a highly regulated environment would also be advantageous as would exposure to CE marking and knowledge of hazardous area regulations.
- Degree or HND in mechanical engineering or combined course where mechanical and thermal fundamentals can be demonstrated.
