The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is a Bristol-based national charity that supports people and organisations across the UK to tackle the climate emergency and end the suffering caused by cold homes. We do this by sharing our knowledge, practical experience and policy insights. For over 40 years, we’ve supported people to take effective action on energy in their homes. We help communities and local councils to understand energy issues, prioritise their efforts and put their plans into action.
The Role
Our Research & Analysis team is looking for a Software Engineer / Senior Software Engineer to collaborate with colleagues and external partners on a variety of projects. Your contribution will help:
- Create innovative software to answer climate change and energy related questions.
- Design, plan, develop and test new software.
- Support and extend existing applications.
- Use software to help colleagues undertake tasks including statistical and spatial analyses, and data management.
The CSE software team is small but growing. Choices of languages, libraries, platforms etc. are made collaboratively by the team and we use a range of languages including Python, Clojure, Javascript and Java in our work.
An applicant appointed to the role will be expected to:
- Manage and deliver software design, planning, development, testing and support.
- Manage larger pieces of work, including discrete projects.
- Take responsibility for technical choices and design decisions.
- Interact with clients and partners.
- Contribute to the development of proposals and bids for new work.
- Help colleagues to undertake tasks such as data management, analysis and modelling.
- Feel comfortable operating in a software team of six, which is part of a growing research and analysis team.
- Directing your own work and making novel systems in an environment free of technical dogma

General responsibilities
As a (Senior) Software Engineer, you will collaborate with CSE colleagues in the Research and Analysis team, across CSE and with external partners. CSE are always looking for candidates who are able to demonstrate they can:

- Advocate positively for CSE, representing CSE positively in all settings.
- Maintain and nourish existing and develop new external relationships that can support and/or enable achievement of CSE’s strategic objectives.
- Maintain and develop the knowledge and skills for your work and professional development and to support others to do the same.
Essential attributes for this role include:
- Demonstrable experience of developing software collaboratively in a professional environment.
- Experience of developing software using Clojure and Python, Javascript or Java.
- A curiosity, willingness and ability to learn new approaches, languages, etc. * Good knowledge of Linux.
- Ability to work effectively both autonomously and as part of a team.
Desirable attributes:
- A degree or equivalent in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, physics, or similar. Advanced Linux knowledge, including experience of using NixOS or similar for reproduceable deployments.
- Experience working with geospatial data and databases.
- Solid mathematics, statistics and/or physics knowledge.
- Experience developing models or simulations, particularly in the energy domain.
- Problem-solving mindset.
