Job Title: Grounds Maintenance Operative

Location: Eartham, Chichester

Salary: Dependant on experience

Job Type: Permanent, full time

About the role:

The Grounds maintenance operative, under the leadership of the Facilities Manager, is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds, gardens, playing fields and sports surfaces around the campus. This role requires a flexible, enthusiastic attitude with the ability to work alone. It is also essential that candidates demonstrate a passion for gardening and landscaping.

Purpose & Main Duties:

  • To help plan and organise the tools and equipment required for your work.
  • Grass cutting, strimming, weeding and clearance works.
  • Sports pitch marking (training would be provided).
  • To regularly check the condition of the buildings and grounds and report to the Facilities Manager.
  • To ensure that all areas of the school are kept in a tidy state and clear of hazards.
  • To be responsible for the use, repair, maintenance and security of plant, machinery and equipment based at the school.
  • To undertake grounds maintenance duties as required, (including mowing, gardening, line painting, repairing fences) ensuring the site is well presented at all times.
  • To assist with management of the swimming pool e.g. pool cleaning and testing.

Health and Safety

  • To be aware of the required Health and Safety legislation and ensure that the school meets these requirements, monitoring and keeping written records as appropriate.
  • To assist in the carrying out of monthly risk assessments regarding health and safety issues and report to the Facilities Manager.
  • To be observant at all times of things around the school which may compromise safety e.g. trip hazards, poor lighting.
  • To be aware of and adhere to applicable rules, regulations, legislation, procedures and policies e.g. the School’s Code of Conduct and Equal Opportunities Policy; COSHH; data protection and copyright legislation.
  • To work safely and bring to managers’ attention any faults, accidents, incidents or near misses and any other health and safety concerns in order that the school remains a healthy and safe environment for all.
  • To undertake training and development as required.

Porterage

  • Ensure that deliveries of equipment, furniture and materials are dealt with promptly and items repositioned as required.
  • Undertake porterage of equipment, furniture and materials within the premises, as required, including setting up seating the hall for productions, etc.

Support for the School & Safeguarding

  • To be aware of upcoming school events and your role within these, taking direction from the Facilities Manager in regard to what set up is required.
  • To be aware of and comply with all school policies and procedures with a particular reference to those relating to child protection, health and safety, security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to the appropriate staff member.
  • To participate in training and other learning activities and performance management as required.
  • To carry out other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Facilities Manager and Senior Leadership Team.

In addition to and alongside the above, all staff are expected to:

  • Comply with safeguarding policies, procedures and the employee code of conduct.
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to safeguarding and pupil/colleague wellbeing.
  • Ensure that any safeguarding concerns or incidents are reported appropriately in line with policy.
  • Engage in safeguarding training when required.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • Horticultural knowledge and experience.
  • PA1 & PA6AW qualifications.
  • Relevant machinery qualifications.
  • Full, clean driving license.
  • Other relevant qualifications including: pitch line marking, ride on mower, hard landscaping experience.
  • Gardening & grounds maintenance experience.
