Job Title: Editor Designate

Salary: £40,000 Depending on experience + Benefits

Job Role: Editor Designate

The QMJ Group are the leading exhibition organizers and media providers for the aggregate products and natural stone industries. As well as organizing the Hillhead, Natural Stone, and Hard Surfaces Shows, the company also produces two trade magazines – Quarry Management and Natural Stone Specialist – and provide the leading digital platforms for these sectors – Agg-Net.com and stonespecialist.com. The company also owns BDS Marketing Research, a market research consultancy specializing in the construction, materials and waste sectors.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the editor-in-chief to eventually oversee all connected content to the natural stone brand
  • Support other QMJ editorial platforms either temporarily or permanently depending on the needs of the business
  • Source, research and write industry features, news stories, company reports, project overviews and analysis articles for our magazines and websites
  • Interview key industry figures
  • Occasionally sub and proof other journalists’ work, maintaining our high grammatical and factual reputation
  • Generate and maintain relationships with key industry representatives at trade bodies, associations, government agencies and NGOs
  • Manage print and online deadlines according to the agreed schedule
  • Regularly edit the Homepage and other relevant areas of the website
  • Utilise our social media presence to broadcast news and updates to our readership
  • Represent QMJ brands at industry events with occasional overnight stays as required
  • Source and manage content for regular e-newsletters
  • Proofread and sign-off pages for print
  • Plan editorial content for magazine development and lead quarterly features meetings with the advertising team
  • Represent QMJ brands at commercial client meetings when required
  • Provide the advertising department with contacts and leads to ensure all commercial opportunities are maximised
  • Assist with press releases for our related exhibitions and conferences when required

About you:

The QMJ Group is seeking an ambitious, self-starting editor to create written B2B content across our printed and digital platforms, at our city centre-based offices in Nottingham. After a successful probationary period, hybrid working arrangements will be available depending on circumstances.

An experienced journalist who has already held a senior position, you will be able to demonstrate both a strong commercial awareness of B2B media and the ability to produce insightful, original, and engaging copy.

You must also strike the right balance between editorial integrity and the ability to spot opportunities and generate revenue-friendly ideas to support a motivated advertising team. An ability to source breaking industry news and identify emerging trends is also essential.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a settled editorial team for two market-leading publications and websites. You will gain exposure to both sides of our business (aggregates and dimensional stone) throughout the first six months of your appointment, with a view to eventually taking on the main Editor’s role for the stone side of the business, as part of our succession planning.

You will also provide commentary, insight and general PR for our related exhibitions and conferences.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification
  • A minimum of three years’ experience gained in a B2B editorial environment. A construction, architectural or industrial editorial background is highly desirable
  • Driving licence/car
  • An organised and professional attitude that prides itself on attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent proof-reading skills
  • The ability to work under pressure to ensure all deadlines are met
  • Online skills including digital editing and experience of social media
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of webinars, podcasts, and video editorial highly desirable, but not essential
  • The ability to impact and influence
  • Content production experience (this is advantageous but not essential as training can be provided)
