Job Title: Lecturer in Sociology

Location: Chester

Salary: £36,386 – £46,047 (Full time equivalent)

Job type: Part Time 0.5 Full time Equivalent- Permanent

The University of Chester is a public university, it originates as the first purpose-built teacher training college in the UK. As a university, we now occupy five campus sites in and around Chester, one in Warrington, and a University Centre in Shrewsbury. We offer a range of foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as undertaking academic research. Due to this ongoing work, we have a series of job positions available across many different sectors.

The Role

The Department of Social and Political Science is seeking to appoint a new member of staff to the existing Sociology team. Our Sociology programme at the University of Chester takes a critical approach, helping students to make sense of complex social issues through evidence-based reasoning, theory and empirical inquiry. There is one 0.5 post available, and this will be awarded based on the fulfilment of the relevant person specification via application and performance at presentation/interview.

The Ideal Candidate

Qualifications

  • Good first degree ideally in related subject.
  • Masters level qualification, in relevant subject.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. Advance HE), or willingness to work towards.
  • Registered for a PhD and close to completion.

Knowledge and experience

  • Experience of teaching and assessing undergraduate students.

Skills and personal attributes

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including communication abilities (verbal, written, digital).
  • An ability to support students both academically and pastorally, including on residential fieldwork in the UK and abroad

Main Responsibilities

  • Facilitate students learning through lectures, tutorials, seminars, fieldwork and associated assessments, at undergraduate levels.
  • Produce high-quality teaching and learning material to support and develop student learning, making use of digital tools (e.g. Moodle, MS Teams) in line with institutional guidance.
  • Provide effective and timely one-to-one (verbal and digital) communication with colleagues and students.
  • Engage in research and scholarly activity to inform teaching.
  • Act as module leader as required
  • Collaborate with academic colleagues on course development and curriculum enhancements.
  • Active membership of departmental committees or task groups.
  • Where appropriate, engage in liaison activity with schools, employers and organisations in Chester/Cheshire and the surrounding region.
  • Enhance the quality of taught modules/programmes through engagement with existing quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Undertake peer mentoring and review of colleagues as required.
